Tax Declarations

Understand and file your annual French income tax declaration with the right supporting documents.

01 — Overview

What this process is

All French tax residents must file an annual income tax declaration with the Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) between April and June, even if income tax is withheld at source.

Who it concerns

Anyone who has lived in France more than 183 days in a calendar year, has a primary residence in France, or earns French-source income.

Common requirements

A numéro fiscal, access to impots.gouv.fr, and complete records of worldwide income for the tax year.

03 — Step by step

The process

  1. 01

    Log in to impots.gouv.fr

Use your numéro fiscal and password. First-time filers must request access via their local centre des finances publiques.

  2. 02

    Verify pre-filled information

Salary and pension data are pre-filled. Check carefully against your own records and correct discrepancies.

  3. 03

    Declare additional income

Add freelance, rental, foreign and investment income. Each category has its own form (2042-C, 2044, 2047).

  4. 04

    Apply credits and reductions

Childcare, home services, donations and energy renovations can substantially reduce your tax.

  5. 05

    Submit before the deadline

Deadlines vary by département and filing method. Late filing triggers a 10% penalty.

  6. 06

    Receive your avis d'imposition

Issued in summer. Keep it — it is required for nearly every French administrative procedure.

04 — Watch out

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to declare foreign bank accounts (form 3916) — heavy fines apply.
  • Confusing tax residency rules in the year of arrival or departure.
  • Missing eligible credits like childcare or energy works.
  • Filing on paper when online filing is mandatory for your situation.
